Knights stave off sweep; pound Pirates, 14-1, in seven inningsUCF pounds out 14 hits in Sunday win over East Carolina
With its back to the wall on Sunday afternoon, UCF responded with a 14-1, seven inning victory via the league’s travel day run-rule over visiting East Carolina. After taking the first two games of the series, the Pirates (30-22, 10-11) were down just 1-0 after three and a half innings. However, the flood gates opened in the bottom of the fourth and the issue was settled after the Golden Knights seven-run inning. UCF (31-21, 8-13) started the frame with three straight singles off East Carolina starter Kevin Brandt. Brad Mincey came in to relieve Brandt and the junior righty allowed four runs—all earned—on four hits. Among those hits were back-to-back home runs by Chris Duffy and Jonathan Griffin. Duffy’s three-run shot was his 18 th of the season. The Knights tacked on five more in the fifth. Their big inning was aided by three Pirate errors and two hit batters. Shane Brown’s solo shot in the sixth provided UCF’s final run.
The Pirates managed just three hits off UCF starter Nick Cicio and their lone run came on Jared Avchen’s seventh home run in the top of the fifth. Cicio worked all seven innings and improved to 4-3 with the win. UCF was led by Chris Talladay’s 3-for-4 effort. Talladay was one of six Knight batters with multi-hit games. The Knights’ final week of the regular season features a home date with Florida Atlantic on Tuesday prior to traveling to New Orleans for a three-game series with Tulane that will begin Thursday. East Carolina will host James Madison on Tuesday before welcoming Houston to Clark-LeClair Stadium on Thursday.
