Maness & Harris lead Pirates past Southern Miss, 8-1
CUSA Pitcher of the Year throws gem against Golden Eagles
Seth Maness showed why he was named Conference USA’s Pitcher of the Year on Thursday afternoon against Southern Miss.
The East Carolina junior no-hit the strong hitting Golden Eagles over the first five innings and ended up allowing just one run on five hits over 7.2 innings to earn his tenth win of the season.
The Pirates (32-26) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Devin Harris’ 12 th home run of the season.
The Pirates pushed across three more in the fifth. Austin Homan singled home a run. He and Harris, who walked, later crossed the plate when Cam Freeman hit into a fielder’s choice and subsequent throwing error.
The Golden Eagles (33-22) got their earned run on an Adam Doleac single in the eighth.
Southern Miss’ Geoffrey Thomas allowed five runs—all earned—on four hits in just 2.1 innings to suffer the loss.
After ECU roughed up Cody Schlagel, Matt Warren and Mandella Mingo threw 3.2 innings of shutout relief, but USM couldn’t muster any offense against Maness and Mincey.
With the victory, ECU moves to 1-1 in the tournament. However, most importantly, the Pirates control their own destiny in their pod and can advance to Saturday’s championship game with a win over Memphis tomorrow.
The Golden Eagles will play host Houston.
