Herd rallies past Raiders for 4-3 extra-inning victoryMarshall takes series from Wright State
After starting quick in yesterday’s 9-7 win over Wright State, Marshall couldn’t muster much early in game one of its weather-dictated doubleheader against the Raiders. However, the Herd would eventually force extra innings and take a 4-3, nine-inning victory. Following two scoreless innings, WSU (29-22) took a 1-0 lead in the third and did so without the benefit of a hit. The Raiders’ Dan Marsh led off the frame with a walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fly out to right by Casey McGrew and crossed the plate on another wild pitch. The Raiders ran their advantage to 3-0 in the fourth. Quentin Cate started the inning with a double to right center. Garrett Gray singled to left field to make it 2-0 before Aaron Fields’ double tacked on another.
The score would remain tied at three until the ninth. Rhett Stafford came through with a one out single and moved into scoring position via a wild pitch. Nathan Gomez proceeded to single home the winning run and produce a 4-3 walk-off victory. Nathan Gomez, Josh Valle and Victor Gomez all had two hits apiece for Marshall.
Despite going just one hitless shutout inning, Tyler Gatrell picked up the victory for the Herd due to the decision to “staff” the game. The teams are currently playing game two of their doubleheader, as Marshall attempts to sweep the series.
