Memphis mauls Murray State, 10-1Tigers thump Racers in mid-week contest Murray State (24-22) scored first, but from that point it was all Memphis on Wednesday night at FedEx Park. The Tigers (25-24) trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the second, but took a 4-1 lead on the strength of a two-run triple by Drew Martinez. Memphis tacked on two more in the third. Rick Russell led off the frame with his fifth home run of the year to left center. Then, Heath Hatfield followed up Jacob Wilson’s double with one of his own to make it 6-1. It remained 6-1 until the sixth when the Tigers plated three runs on just two hits due to the aid of two walks and a passed ball. Tyler Huelsing delivered a two-run single to center. UM scored its final run in the eighth.
Martinez led the Tigers with his 3-for-5 effort. Chad Zurcher and Jacob Wilson also went 2-for-4 to have multi-hit games for Memphis. Colton Moore, Kyle Tiernan and Drew Pixley all went 2-for-3 for Murray State. Heath Hatfield picked up the win for Memphis. Hatfield, who improved to 4-3 with the victory, allowed just a single run on six hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked no one. The Tigers threw five different pitchers to finish the final four innings. Memphis will travel to Norman, Oklahoma this weekend where it will play a three-game non-conference series against the Big 12’s Sooners.
