Owls soar into Super Regional roundRice will host the winner of the College Station Regional this weekendCUSA Fans sports writer Joey Whelan brings us a recap of the NCAA Baseball Tournament's Houston Regional featuring the three games that the Rice Owls played in.
Game 1 - Prairie View vs. RiceRice wasted no time in making a statement in this year’s NCAA Tournament, shutting out Prairie View 5-0 in their first round match up, to move into the winner’s bracket of the Houston Region. Thanks to stellar pitching from starter Matt Langwell and reliever Bobby Bramhall, the Panthers were held to just 5 hits over the course of the game. Langwell went 7 innings striking out 8 batters, and Bramhall struck out 4 batters in his 2 innings of work. Prairie View starter Matthew Chase did a solid job, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings. His only mistake came in the first inning when he allowed a two-run homerun to Tyler Henley. What sank the Panthers was atrocious play in the field. Prairie View committed 6 errors on the afternoon, and allowed two additional unearned runs to score.
Game 2 – Rice vs. TCUThe Owls put themselves in the driver seat of the Houston Region with a 6-3 win over TCU on Saturday. Jared Gayhart and Danny Lehmann each hit a home run and a double, and Joe Savery drove in a pair of runs to lead the way for Rice. The Owls were consistent, scoring in four out of the first six innings on their way to building a 5-2 lead. TCU would add a final run in the 7 th, while Rice would plate one more run in the 9 th. Rice starter Ryan Berry went 6.1 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 7 batters. The win was the eleventh of the season for Berry. With the win on Saturday, all Rice had to do was beat the winner of the TCU vs. Baylor elimination game once out of two potential games.
Game 3 – TCU vs. RiceWith a 3-1 victory in the Houston Regional Championship game over TCU, Rice advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the third straight season. The Owls trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the 4 th inning, but would score 2 runs in that inning and add a third run in the bottom half of the 6th inning. Diego Seastrunk, Aaron Luna and Danny Lehman all drove in a run, while Jess Buenger went 3-for-4 at the plate. Starter Joe Savery improved to 10-1 on the season, going 7 innings and allowing just the one run on 6 hits. Rice will now await their opponent in the NCAA Super Regional.
