Rice falls to UNC, rematch set for Thursday night
Rice will face North Carolina at 7 pm (EST) on ESPN2
CUSA Fans sports writer Joey Whelan provides a brief recap of the College World Series rematch of the Rice Owls and North Carolina Tar Heels.
Rice found themselves in unfamiliar territory on Wednesday, falling to #2 ranked North Carolina 6-1 in the College World Series. The Owl bats were shut down by Tar Heel starter Robert Woodard who allowed just one run on six hits over 7.1 innings. Rice didn't score until the 7th inning when Danny Lehmann lined an RBI double that scored Jared Gayhart from third base.
North Carolina wasted little time flexing their muscles, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Lead off man Reid Fronk led the game off and was hit by Rice starter Ryan Berry. Tim Fredroff and Josh Horton followed with back-to-back singles that scored Fronk and gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.
Things got worse for Rice in the second inning when UNC's Chad Flack and Dustin Ackerly each reached on fielding errors. Both runners would eventually score putting the Tar Heels up 3-0, more than enough to come away with the win. Berry left the game in the 4th inning, stepping aside for reliever Chris Kelley who went 4.2 innings.
North Carolina added three more runs in the 7th inning when Dustin Ackerly slugged a three-run home run. Rice would add their lone run in the bottom of the inning but it would not be enough.
Rice and North Carolina will meet again on Thursday for game two of their series.
