Green Wave gets past Warhawks, 8-5Tulane takes mid-week contest from UL-Monroe After getting swept at home by Southern Miss over the weekend, Tulane needed a win badly in Tuesday’s match-up with UL-Monroe at Turchin Stadium. The Green Wave (27-19, 6-9) got on the board first when Jeremy Schaffer led off the bottom of the second by homering to left field. Tulane tacked onto its lead in the fourth. After the Green Wave loaded the bases via a pair of walks and an error, Brennan Middleton delivered a three-run double down the left field line. Brandon Boudreaux would later single to push the lead to 5-0 after four. The Warhawks (16-28, 6-15) would cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth. Four straight batters singled to start the inning with the fourth, Kelvin York, driving in ULM’s first run. Two more runs would score in the frame, but the damage could have been worse if not for a double play.
Rick Jones’ club responded with three runs in the seventh inning. With a runner on first with two down, four straight Green Wave hitters singled. Garrett Cannizaro came through with a single to score two. ULM plated two runs in the eighth to trim the margin to 8-5, but that’s as close as they would get. Tulane’s Nick Pepitone, the fourth pitcher of the game, worked a hitless inning and a third to record his sixth save. Starter Matt Petiton went 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits to improve his record to 4-3. The Green Wave goes to Houston this weekend in a series that is very important to each team as they attempt to qualify for the newly-formatted six-team CUSA Tournament at Cougar Stadium later this month.
