Today, our new UTEP Correspondent Robert Robles brings you a recap of the basketball game between UTEP and Marshall.
With the win, the Miners improve to 10-6 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Thundering Herd fell to 5-10 on the year and 0-2 in Conference USA. The Miners had five players in double figures. Kevin Henderson led the way with 21 points while Marvin Kilgore followed him with 15 and Malik Alvin with finished with 14. The Thundering Herd had three players in double figures and was led by Tre Whitted with 20 points. Robbie Jackson followed him with 12 and Chris Ross with 10. The Miner defense was suffocating for the Herd, as Marshall only shot 32 percent from the field. It was the third straight game in which the Miners have limited opponents to less than 40 percent shooting. Conversely, the Miners shot a respectable 47 percent from the field. A guard oriented team is usually undersized and that is the case for the Miners, but despite that disadvantage the Miners have outrebounded their past three opponents 117-90. Kevin Henderson came into replace a struggling Stefon Jackson, who got into quick foul trouble and looked a bit sluggish. Henderson was more than an adequate replacement as he came through with a phenomenal performance and finished 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Next up for the Miners is a trip to Tulsa. This will be a good measuring stick for a UTEP club that seems to be developing nicely. The Golden Hurricane remains undefeated at home (11-0) after their 67-49 victory over East Carolina on Wednesday night. Rod Earls leads Doug Wojcik’s club. The junior guard is averaging 13.2 points per game and is coming off a 25-point performance against the Pirates, which saw him sink 7-of-9 shots from behind the arc.
