Conference USA Week 10 Quick Game Recaps
Tulsa 24, UCF 17 Tulsa traveled to defending champ UCF with its four-game win streak on the line. The Golden Hurricane (6-3, 5-0) trailed 17-16 early in the fourth quarter, but G.J. Kinne hooked up with Clay Sears for the decisive game-winning 16-yard pass with 8:23 to play. Kinne and company racked up 454 yards of offense--including 251 yards on the ground. Tulsa's veteran signal-caller threw for 203 while also running for 92. UCF (4-5, 2-3), whose hopes of repeating were dealt a serious blow, got 272 yards of offense--226 passing and 46 rushing--from Jeff Godfrey.
No. 14 Houston 56, UAB 13 Case Keenum passing for more than 400 yards is nothing new. However, this 400-plus yard performance--407 to be exact--was special as it helped Houston's veteran signal-caller set yet another NCAA career mark as he sailed past former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang's mark of 17,072. Keenum, who was an impressive 39-of-44 on the night, is currently at 17,212 and will have a legitimate shot at 19,000 if his Cougars can make the CUSA Championship game to give him five more games in his UH career. With the win, Houston is off to a school-best 9-0 start and kept pace with Tulsa atop CUSA's West Division. Tyron Carrier had 12 catches totaling 105 yards for the Cougars, who compiled 654 yards of offense. UAB (1-8, 1-5) was limited to 269 yards of offense and outscored 35-3 after halftime.
No. 24 Southern Miss 48, East Carolina 28 Southern Miss scored four non-offensive touchdowns to highlight a critical 48-28 win at CUSA East rival East Carolina. The Golden Eagles (8-1, 4-1), who have won seven straight, were in danger of falling behind 14-0 early. However, Jamie Collins produced a momentum-changing 97-yard interception return for a touchdown to tie the game. Just over four minutes later, USM led 21-7 after a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown by Tracy Lampley and a blocked punt being returned for a score. The Pirates (4-5, 3-2), who brought a three-game win streak into the contest, led 7-0 after Reese Wiggins took a screen pass 72 yards for a score on the game's second play. Dominique Davis finished 22-of-36 for 262 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two pick-sixes--the second of which gave the Golden Eagles a 38-14 halftime advantage.
SMU 45, Tulane 24 The Mustangs (6-3, 4-2) raced to a 31-0 halftime lead and held off a furious Tulane rally to collect a much-needed 45-24 victory on Saturday at Ford Stadium. J.J. McDermott threw for three scores and Zach Line rushed for three scores to lead the way for SMU. McDermott finished 29-of-40 for 322 while Line logged 143 yards on the ground. Tulane (2-8, 1-5) pulled within 38-24 after two touchdown passes by Ryan Griffin helped produce a 24-point third quarter. However, Griffin fumbled early in the fourth and the Ponies produced a 12-play, 75-yard death drive to seal the deal.
Rice 41, UTEP 37 Nick Fanuzzi passed for 405 yards and Rice rolled up 671 yards in a 41-37 win over visiting UTEP. The Owls (3-6, 2-4), who snapped a three-game losing streak, trailed the Miners, 24-20, at the break and 31-27 after three quarters. However, Fanuzzi threw two of his three touchdown passes in the decisive final period to help keep his team's slim hopes of reaching bowl eligibility alive. UTEP (4-5, 1-4) closed to within four after Lamaison's third touchdown pass of the game with 42 seconds left, but the Owls recovered the onsides kick.
