Following a little over four and a half frustrating seasons at the helm of the Tulane program, Bob Toledo resigned on Tuesday.
The position has proven to be one of the most difficult in college football over the years, as the Green Wave hasn't managed a winning season since 2002 and they've produced just four in the last three decades.
Toledo, who compiled a 15-40 record in his four-plus seasons, never won more than four games. His 2007 and 2010 teams went 4-8. Tulane finished 2-10 in 2008 and 3-9 in 2009.
The Green Wave got off to a good start this season, as it won games against FCS foe Southeastern Louisiana (47-33) and UAB (49-10) with a 31-3 home loss to Tulsa in between. However, Tulane has since dropped four straight with just one of those (Syracuse, 37-34) being by less than 21 points.
Co-offensive coordinator Mark Hutson will assume the duties of interim coach for the remainder of the season. Hutson, who was previously the interim head coach at Eastern Illinois of the FCS ranks, has also coached at Murray State, Boise State, Arkansas, and Tulsa. He was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma and later returned to Norman as a graduate assistant. (www.tulanegreenwave.com)
Two of Tulane's four winning seasons in the last 30 years came in 1997 and 1998 during Tommy Bowden's brief two-year stint in New Orleans. It will be interesting to see if the school seeks to gauge the interest of current CBS-SN commentator and former West Virginia and Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez. Rodriguez was on Bowden's Tulane staff before following him to Clemson.
