ECU Player Profile: Sam Hinnant

East Carolina men's basketball player Sam Hinnant

Sam Hinnant
East Carolina University
Senior – Guard – 6’4”

Senior guard for the East Carolina Men’s Basketball team, Sam Hinnant has played a valuable part of the Pirate family over the past four years.

How old were you when you started playing basketball?
“I started playing basketball at the age of 5.  My dad gave me the choice of playing all the sports that included baseball, football and basketball. I liked all the sports but basketball seemed to stick.”

What made you decide to play for East Carolina University?
“I decided to come to ECU because it wasn't too far from home, but it wasn't too close either.  I had the opportunity to go to bigger colleges far away, but I decided to stay in North Carolina.  I also have a lot of family in Wilson, NC, which is not far from Greenville.”

Who or what is your inspiration to play ball?
“ My inspiration to play ball is my family. I have always wanted to succeed to make my family proud of me, and so far I think I have done a good job of making them happy and keeping their support.”

Do you have any rituals that you do before a game?
“Yeah, one ritual I have is to listen to my iPod.  I usually listen to Hip Hop songs to get me hype for the game.  I also make sure I call my mother before the game.  There isn't a real reason behind calling her, but it is something I have been doing since I was a freshman.”

What are your personal records in basketball?
“In High School I am the second leader scorer in school history.  I have the record with several other individuals for 3's in a game with 8 three pointers in one game.  I hopefully can break other records before I finish here at ECU.”

What awards have you won playing basketball?
“When I was in high school I was privilege to be on a State Championship 4A basketball team at Vance High School.  I won MVP that year and that was one of my best honors.  I had the privilege of playing on the 3rd ranked Prep School team in the nation at Fork Union Military.  And I was on the All-Freshman team here at ECU when I was a freshman.”

What else do you like to do on your free time?
“ During my free time, I like to play the XBOX 360.  I like playing my teammates in games.”

Do you have any role models in your life?
“Yeah, my role models are my parents. They always showed me that working hard gets you far and I have tried to follow that motto throughout my career.”

After graduation what are your plans?
“After graduation, my first plan is to have a good job.  If its continuing to play basketball elsewhere professionally or working behind a desk, I want to succeed in whatever I do.”

What is the best part about being an ECU Pirate?
“The best part about being a ECU Pirate, is that the community is so supportive.  My first three years here have been a struggle record wise, but the fans still come out and support us to the fullest each game.  The ECU Pirate community is the best thing and that is a real reason many people choose to come to school here.  I don't regret a moment here.”
