East Carolina top Tulane, 66-49, to conclude regular season Pirates will be the No. 10 seed at next week's CUSA Tourney in Memphis
Maurice Kemp and Darrius Morrow combined to score 41 points to lead East Carolina to a 66-49 road win at Tulane on Saturday night. The Pirates (14-15, 5-11) shot just 38.5 percent (10-of-26) before halftime and turned the ball over ten times, but still managed to take a 26-22 advantage into the locker room. East Carolina didn't score for nearly the first four minutes and trailed 5-2 after Darrius Morrow's dunk at the 16:15 mark. Robert Sampson's three-pointer with just over 12 minutes to go in the opening half gave the Pirates their first lead at 14-12.
ECU continued to add to its advantage and a lay-up by Morrow completed a 9-0 run that made it 20-12 with 8:43 remaining. Jeff Lebo's club managed just six points--one field goal and four Maurice Kemp free throws--the rest of the half, but still clung to its four-point lead at the break. Tulane scored the first basket of the second half to get within two, but the Pirates quickly pushed their lead to double figures when Morrow converted two free throws to make it 39-29 with just over 12 minutes remaining. ECU extended its lead to 12 before the Green Wave got within 47-40 after Ricky Tarrant sunk a pair of free throws at the 6:26 mark. However, back-to-back fastbreak dunks by Morrow and Kemp pushed the Pirates' advantage back to double digits where it would stay the rest of the way. Maurice Kemp produced 22 points and ten rebounds while Morrow finished with 19 points and seven boards.
ECU finished the night at 48 percent (24-of-50) from the floor and a solid 14-of-17 from the charity stripe. The Pirates also possessed a rare advantage on the glass, as they outrebounded the Green Wave, 39-22. Ricky Tarrant, who scored a team-high 16 points, was just 3-of-13 from the floor, but 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Josh Davis tallied nine points and eight rebounds. Tulane finished the night at 37.8 percent (17-of-45) from the floor and just 20 percent (4-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Pirates will open CUSA Tourney play on Wednesday when they face seventh-seeded Rice at 1 p.m. in first round action at the FedEx Forum in Memphis.
