UAB hires longtime Roy Williams' assistant Jerod Haase

Haase becomes just fifth coach in program's history

"He's a winner. It is in his DNA."

Those were some of the words spoken by UAB Director of Athletics Brian Mackin when he introduced Jerod Haase as the Blazers' new men's basketball coach on Tuesday.

Haase, 38, comes to Birmingham after a successful nine-year stint at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a part of two national title teams.

Prior to his time with the Tar Heels, he served on Roy Williams' staff at another one of college basketball's most storied programs--his alma mater--the University of Kansas.

After starting 99 of 101 games over three seasons, Haase left Lawrence ranking in the program's career top ten in assists, steals, and three-pointers.

He played his freshman season at Cal as a part-time starter in a backcourt that also featured NBA standout Jason Kidd.

While Haase doesn't have any head coaching experience, he has spent over 15 years playing and coaching under one of the best coaches in the business as two of the top programs in NCAA history.

The Blazers' new boss knows UAB has what he needs to continue his track record of winning at a program known as a winner.

"This job has everything I could hope for. This is a dream situation because I can recruit at a high-level here."
