Conference USA Basketball
Recap of Wednesday, February 8th games
Updated Conference USA basketball standings
Rice 78, Marshall 75 (OT)
In a year when most of the media attention is on Memphis, Morris Almond is giving others a reason to turn their attention to the Rice Owls. Almond had 36 points and 10 rebounds to help Rice escape a determined Herd team in Huntington. After having 30 in a loss to Memphis on Saturday, Almond followed that up by coming up clutch with a three point play with five seconds left to seemingly put the game away. With Rice up three with less than five seconds remaining, Coach Willis Wilson called for a foul to try and prevent a tying three-pointer. Wilson's plan backfired as Chris Ross hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. LaVar Carter laid the ball in to tie the score. Marshall had a chance to win after forcing a traveling violation, but Whitted's 3-point attempt bounced off as time expired.
Lorenzo Williams scored seven of his 15 points in the overtime period and the Owls escaped. Mark Patton had 26 points and nine rebounds to lead Marshall. Marshall hosts Memphis on Saturday while Rice will travel to Tulsa.
Southern Miss 59, Central Florida 51
The month long losing streak is history! Southern Miss ended their six game, month-long losing streak by defeating the Knights on Wednesday night. Mildon Ambres and Travis Hall scored 11 points apiece in the first ever meeting between the two schools. Southern Miss trailed 35-28 with 14 minutes to play, but Chris Craft hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 10-1 Southern Miss run to put the Eagles ahead. With the game tied at 40-all, Courtney Beasly converted a 3-point play and followed with another basket to put Southern Miss ahead for good. Beasly finished with 9 points. Southern Miss had only five turnovers while UCF had 16. Southern Miss will host UTEP on Saturday and UCF will host Tulane.
Tulsa 55, SMU 51
Charles Ramsdell scored 15 points to help lead Tulsa to a 55-51 win over SMU and break a four game losing streak in Dallas on Wednesday night. Darold Crow added 11 points and Anthony Price had 11 rebounds for the Golden Hurricane who won despite only shooting 35% from the field.
SMU, trailing by eight with just under two minutes to play, scored six straight points to come within two with 37 seconds remaining. However, Chris Wallace went 4-4 from the free throw line in the last minute of the game to seal the win. Tulsa will host Rice on Saturday and SMU will travel to Houston.
UTEP 65, UAB 37
UTEP scored the first 10 points of the game as they cruised past UAB on Wednesday. The game was never in doubt as UTEP held the Blazers to 25% shooting and under 20 points in each half. In the second half and with the game well in hand, the Miner fans turned their attention towards the top team in the conference, belting out “We Want Memphis” in reference to the February 22 showdown with the Tigers. John Tofi scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Texas-El Paso and Jason Williams added 14 points and nine rebounds. UTEP will travel to Southern Miss on Saturday while UAB will try to rebound against East Carolina at home. |
