Marshall 62, Southern Miss 57
Mark Patton and Mark Dorris scored 14 points each to lead Marshall over Southern Miss on Saturday. Marshall's defense held Southern Miss to just 37 percent shooting after the Golden Eagles shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half.
David Cornwell, Courtney Beasley and Jason Forte all scored 12 apiece for the Golden Eagles in the loss while Forte also added eight rebounds. The Golden Eagles fell behind early, but used a 20-4 run over nine minutes of the first half to take a 22-10 lead with 8:30 remaining in the first half.
Marshall will have senior night on Wednesday against Central Florida while Southern Miss will travel to Tulane.
Tulane 66, East Carolina 53
David Gomez scored 15 points to lead Tulane in spoiling ECU’s homecoming on Saturday. East Carolina led 30-29 at the half, shooting 37 percent from the field and making 4-of-11 3-point attempts. The Green Wave rallied and shot over 57 percent in the second period, while holding East Carolina to only eight second-half field goals. Corey Rouse led the Pirates with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jeremy Ingram added 9 points.
Quincy Davis was Tulane's second-leading scorer with 13 points. Tulane will host Southern Miss on Wednesday and East Carolina will take the week off before playing at Southern Miss.
Memphis 78, Tulsa 67
Shawne Williams scored 21 points, including nine during the game-deciding run over the final six minutes, to lead Memphis to a victory over Tulsa on Saturday. Tulsa stayed close until Williams began scoring inside as Memphis outscored the Golden Hurricane 18-3 down the stretch to win its 15th game in a row and earn at least a share of the conference title. The Tigers finally put Tulsa away with an 11-0 run, capped by a dunk from Rodney Carney, to give them some breathing room at 71-62 with 2 minutes left. Carney finished with 20 points, while Darius Washington scored 13 points for Memphis.
Brett McDade led Tulsa with 14 points, five assists and five rebounds, while Darold Crow scored 11 points. Ray Reese finished with 10 points. Tulsa, which lost 84-61 to Memphis at home earlier in the month, held a 62-60 lead when Reese connected on a pair of free throws with just under 6 minutes remaining. Memphis will travel to UAB on Thursday while Tulsa will travel to UTEP.
Central Florida 77, Rice 64
Justin Rose scored 22 points and Josh Peppers added 21 points for Central Florida, which beat Rice 77-64 on Saturday night. Central Florida hit 12 3-pointers and shot 57 percent from the field. Rice shot less than 40 percent and trailed 32-28 at halftime.
The Owls went on a 7-0 run in the second half to come within 42-40, but UCF's Mike O'Donnell hit a 3-pointer to halt the rally. Jamaal Moore and Lorenzo Williams each had 13 points for Rice, and Morris Almond added 11. Central Florida will travel to Marshall on Wednesday and Rice will travel across town to play Houston.
UTEP 69, Houston 63
Jason Williams scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Texas-El Paso to a 69-63 win over Houston on Saturday night. Williams also shot 2-of-2 from 3-point range and had four assists. Miguel Ayala added 17 points for UTEP while Will Kimble had 12 and Kevin Henderson added 11. Kimble also had 10 rebounds for the Miners. Ramon Dyer and Oliver Lafayette each scored 19 points for Houston (18-7, 8-4). Dyer had 10 rebounds and shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and Lafayette made 3 of 12 3-point attempts. Brian Latham had a game-high six assists. UTEP shot 43 percent from the field and Houston shot 34 percent. UTEP led 31-27 at halftime.
Even with the loss, Houston clinched a first round bye in the C-USA tournament. UTEP will host Tulsa on Wednesday while Houston hosts its crosstown rival, Rice. |
