Conference USA Basketball Power 5

CUSA-fans.com presents the Conference USA Basketball Power 5, a weekly-updated ranking of the top 5 basketball teams in Conference USA as voted on by the CUSA-fans.com staff. Like the Top 25 polls, 5 points are awarded for a 1st place vote and 1 for a 5th place vote.

A special thanks goes to our weekly "Fan of the Week Guest Voter," fsquid. fsquid is a frequent poster on the Conference USA bbs message board and was chosen by qualifying according to our weeekly contest rules. If you want to be a guest voter in the CUSA-fans.com Power 5 rankings check the CUSA Conference Talk board for the thread about our Power 5 rankings & contest and maybe you will be next week's winner!

All comments, records and RPI rankings are through 01/28 games.

Rank Team Points Record RPI Comments

1 Memphis (5) 25 19-2
(5-0)
2 The Tigers next three games are on the road, but should not be much trouble. Wednesday @ Tulsa and Saturday @ Rice are this week's match-ups. The biggest worry in Memphis? How much will the low-ranked C-USA opponenets hurt their RPI ranking.

2 UAB 20 15-4
(5-1)
44 Despite the close loss @ Memphis the Blazers have still won 11 of 12 and are the 2nd-best team in Conference USA. The next game for UAB is @ UCF on Saturday before an important game @ UTEP next Wednesday (Feb. 8th).

3 UTEP 15 12-5
(5-0)
120 The first real challenge of the C-USA schedule for the Miners comes on Wednesday with UTEP @ Houston. The Miners are 0-2 against RPI Top 100 teams this year and Houston is #74 in the RPI.

4 Houston 9 12-6
(3-3)
79 The Cougars host UTEP on Wednesday night then should really be able to put it on cruise control until late February (emphasis on should). They do not face a RPI Top 200 team again until visiting the Miners in El Paso on February 25th.

5t Central Florida 2 9-9
(3-2)
201 UCF has a higer RPI ranking, a better overall and a better C-USA record than Marshall and Rice. Their next game is at home as they host UAB on Saturday in what could be a huge opportunity for the Golden Knights to make a statement in their new conference.

5t Marshall 2 8-10
(1-4)
212 The win over WVU is huge for this program and their fans, and if the Herd can build on this big win and get above .500 they may have saved Jirsa's job.
See "Herd thunders past West Virginia again" for more.

5t Rice 2 9-10
(3-3)
227 The Owls have been hanging around the bottom of our Power 5 rankings for weeks and seem to have decided to do the same this week. Rice has a week off before hosting Memphis on Saturday.

Also receiving votes: SMU 1

Added this week: UCF, Marshall

Dropped out: SMU
